Planning for JEA’s water purification program began in 2014. The three-phase multi-year program consists of pilot testing, demonstration and implementation. JEA has branded the water purification program H2.0®, as a nod to the 2.0 version of JEA’s water (H20) supply. JEA’s H2.0 Purification Center, which is currently under construction, is part of the second phase of this program. The one million-gallon-per-day purification center will be used to showcase purification technology, while engaging the public and stakeholders in this process. It will include a visitor education area and serve as a training facility for JEA staff and industry leaders. The purification process to be demonstrated at the Center is similar to what nature does through rainfall replenishing the aquifer — only with a smaller footprint, in a shorter amount of time. This multi-barrier purification process is based on membrane and advanced oxidation technology which will provide JEA long-term aquifer sustainability to meet future water needs and help educate our community. JEA is committed to being a good neighbor to the local community. The current site plan calls for a substantial landscape buffer between the northern property boundary of Deerwood Country Club and the site. Over 100 bushes and 50 large tress will be planted on the southeast portion of JEA’s property to create a layered landscape buffer. There will also be a security fence, retention pond with a berm, and parking areas between the building and the Deerwood community boundary. The technology to be used at the Center is similar to drinking water treatment, as opposed to sewage treatment. The entire process is enclosed so there are no exposed odor sources. JEA also had a noise study performed as part of the design to ensure the operation of the Purification Center complies with the City of Jacksonville noise ordinance day and night. The building will have a modern and appealing exterior that will complement the surrounding environment. JEA, 7599 Southside Blvd., contractor is The Haskell Co., 39,000 square feet, new H2.O Purification Center building, $42 million. These are the largest commercial building permits by job cost issued March 13, 2024, by the city of Jacksonville.
